Experience, evidence and transparency
AI and professional experience
An open explanation of AI’s role in this website, the experience behind it and the importance of distinguishing generated content from evidence.

Experience established before generative AI
Philip Russell qualified as a chartered surveyor in 1989 and established Philip Russell Associates in 1991. His career in building surveying, project management, project recovery and commercial resolution was established over decades before today’s generative AI tools became widely available.
The professional experience, appointments and project outcomes described on this website come from that career. AI has helped present the material; it did not carry out those projects, earn the qualifications or build the client relationships.
How this website was created
This website was created with ChatGPT, using Philip’s existing CV, career history, project information and instructions. AI helped develop the design, page structure, code and wording, with Philip directing and reviewing the result. This includes assistance with the wording of this transparency page and the privacy notice.
The website is an AI-assisted presentation of professional experience. Its appearance and fluency should be assessed alongside the substance of that experience, rather than treated as independent verification of it.
Where AI can add value
Used thoughtfully, AI can help organise information, improve clarity, explore alternative approaches and make material easier to access. It can be a useful aid to an experienced professional who understands the subject and can challenge the output.
AI can also produce convincing errors, overlook context and generate references or explanations that do not withstand checking. Confidence of expression is not a measure of accuracy. Material that informs a professional decision needs appropriate verification against the relevant evidence and circumstances.
Where use becomes misuse
AI should not be used to invent qualifications, appointments, completed projects, results or client testimonials. Nor should generated photographs, drawings or visualisations be presented as evidence of an existing building, an actual inspection or work that has been delivered.
A realistic image can combine a real person’s likeness with an invented setting or event. Starting from a genuine photograph does not make the resulting scene a photographic record. Realistic generated or materially altered imagery should be clearly labelled where it appears, so the reader can understand what it represents.
Likewise, an AI-generated endorsement is not an independent client reference, and polished website copy is not proof of competence.
Professional judgement and responsibility
Our approach is to use technology in support of professional judgement. AI cannot replace the inspections, enquiries, analysis and understanding required by an agreed appointment. Philip remains responsible for the professional advice he provides, in accordance with that appointment.
Any use of AI in client work must respect confidentiality and the handling of personal information. Publishing this website does not give permission to disclose a client’s confidential material to an AI service.
Our Terms and Conditions set out the basis of our services, and our Privacy Notice explains how personal information is handled.
